Webinar with Sir Ian McGeechan Thursday March 18th 7.30pm

We are delighted to announce that Lions and Scotland rugby legend Sir Ian McGeechan will be talking to Andy Dunne in our latest webinar that will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday March 18th, just before the last round of matches in this year’s 6 Nations.

Sir Ian is truly rugby royalty. He is known as the greatest Lion because of his enduring involvement with the team. He toured as a player with the Lions in 1974 and 1977 and was Head Coach in 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2009. In 2005 he coached the midweek side on the Lions tour to New Zealand on the invitation of Clive Woodward. As well as his unequalled career with the Lions, Sir Ian has enjoyed a stellar career as a player and coach with Scotland and a number of leading English professional teams.

Ian McGeechan was born in Leeds to a Glaswegian father. He trained to be a PE teacher, and a passion for rugby was born at a young age. First playing for Headingley, he made his debut for Scotland in 1972. He won thirty-two caps, playing at fly-half and centre and captained Scotland nine times.

In 1986 he was appointed assistant Scotland coach and was subsequently promoted to coach. In 1990, his team won a Grand Slam victory in the Five Nations Championship.

Appointed Director of Rugby at London Wasps in 2005, he led his team to the Powergen Anglo Welsh Cup title. In his second season, London Wasps claimed the Heineken Cup and in his third season, they lifted the Premiership cup.

In 2010 Sir Ian joined the coaching staff at Gloucester as an advisor to Head Coach Bryan Redpath and his coaching team, and in 2010 he moved to Bath Rugby as performance director and subsequently took over as the director of rugby at Bath in 2011.

In 2012 he was appointed executive chairman of Leeds Carnegie.

Sir Ian was knighted in the 2010 New Years’ Honours List for his services to rugby, having already received an OBE in 1990.
