Women’s AIL: Old Belvedere vs Wicklow

Score: Old Belvedere 45 – 12 Wicklow
Venue: Ollie Campbell Park
Competition: Energia All-Ireland League Women’s Division – Round 5

Old Belvedere stormed to an impressive 45-12 victory over Wicklow on Saturday at Ollie Campbell Park, putting on a dominant display that saw them score seven tries. Coming off the back of their first win of the season and the departure of head coach Tania Rosser from her Leinster role, ‘Belvo’ was fired up and showed just how dangerous they can be when they find their rhythm.

First Half: From the outset, Old Belvedere set a high tempo and quickly asserted control, with their defense stifling any attempts from Wicklow to gain momentum. Wicklow, who entered the match with one of the league’s best defensive records, found themselves unable to hold back Belvo’s relentless attack. By halftime, Old Belvedere had already secured a commanding 24-0 lead, thanks to tries from Eowyn Edwards, Jade Gaffney, and a brace from Megan Edwards. Jemma Farrell contributed three successful conversions, further extending their lead and showcasing their clinical finishing.

Second Half: Wicklow attempted to rally in the second half, with Erana Te Moananui and Rachel Griffey crossing the line to get them on the scoreboard. Beth Roberts, the league’s top scorer, added a conversion, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. Old Belvedere continued their assault, with Megan Edwards completing her hat-trick and further tries from Sinead Farrell and Jemma Farrell. Jemma added two more conversions, wrapping up a comprehensive win for the home side.

This commanding victory not only boosts Old Belvedere’s position in the league but also underscores their growth and potential in the season. With standout performances from Megan Edwards and the Farrell sisters, Belvo will be looking to build on this momentum in the coming fixtures. Wicklow, on the other hand, will need to regroup after two tough losses in succession, as they look to retain their spot near the top of the table.
